Alabama Building Training and Assessment Center (ABTAC)

Alabama Building Training and Assessment Center (ABTAC) aims at promoting sustainable buildings at the state and national levels. This aim will be achieved by providing energy assessments and efficiency recommendations to our clients, and creating, translating, and disseminating knowledge of building technologies and energy saving approaches to nurture sustainable commercial and institutional buildings.

What We Do

Alabama Building Training and Assessment Center (ABTAC) is funded by the Office of State and Community Energy Programs (SCEP) of the U.S. Dept. of Energy to

  • Identify opportunities for optimizing energy efficiency and environmental performance in commercial and institutional buildings through faculty-led student assessment teams,
  • Train building energy efficiency professionals in energy efficient design and operation to meet local and regional workforce demand,
  • Promote research and development for the use of alternative energy sources and distributed generation to supply heat and power for buildings, particularly energy-intensive buildings.
  • Promote the application of emerging concepts and technologies in commercial and institutional buildings.

Mission

Our mission is to become an accessible resource for sustainable buildings in Alabama. As a team, the ATBAC, ME, and CCEE departments, and UA SafeState are working on training building energy efficiency professional in efficient design and operation. In addition, our partners Energy Alabama and Alabama Power Co. are working effortlessly to support development of the next generation of engineers, technicians, operators, and related trades to ensure continuing improvement in building energy performance.
